Liver Transplant

Some liver conditions can lead to liver failure and the need for a liver transplant. Washington University specialists have one of the top liver transplant teams in the country, with complication rates among the lowest. Liver transplants are used to treat patients with end-stage liver disease who have failed standard medical and surgical therapy.

Each patient is evaluated individually for transplant to ensure the patient is healthy enough to survive transplant and will receive long-term benefits.

The liver transplant team of gastroenterology works closely with the liver transplant surgeons to manage the whole process for the patient. They supervise care of patients needing transplantation, and after transplant, manage postoperative recovery and long term care, including prevention of rejection.
