Biography
Dr. Ashkar holds a medical degree from King Abdul-Aziz University, Faculty of Medicine. In 2015, Dr. Ashkar completed a three-year Internal Medicine Residency Program at Steward St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. For his outstanding performance during residency, he was recruited and completed one year of Chief Residency in Internal Medicine by June of 2016. Dr. Ashkar completed a three-year fellowship in Gastroenterology at Washington University in St. Louis in June 2019. Dr. Ashkar joined the division of Gastroenterology at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis in 2020 after completing one-year of advanced fellowship training in Medical Pancreatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dr. Ashkar is a member of the American Pancreatic Association, the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology. Dr. Ashkar is a reviewer for the journal Pancreatology (The official journal of the International Association of Pancreatology).
Dr. Ashkar major clinical research interests involve the diagnosis and management of pancreatitis with primary focus in drug-induced pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer screening in high-risk populations.
Clinical Interests
Acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, autoimmune pancreatitis, pancreatic cysts, pancreatic tumors, pancreatic cancer screening.
My clinical expertise is in general gastroenterology with primary niche in pancreatic disorders. Helping patients with complex pancreatic diseases is my far most priority and this starts by improving the public knowledge base and understanding of pancreatic diseases, which will improve precision and choice of treatment offered.
