Career Tracks The fellowship program is designed with two tracks, each three years in length. Both tracks are intended to provide broad clinical experience leading to board certification in gastroenterology. The clinician track is institutionally funded. It emphasizes clinical training and scholarly clinical research throughout all three years, providing generous exposure to endoscopic procedures, hepatology and liver transplantation, and general gastroenterological patient care. Two fellows are accepted into the clinician track each academic year. The investigator track is funded through an NIH Training Grant. It emphasizes specialized training in research methods. Following a fully clinical 18 months, trainees on this track have very limited clinical rotations to allow time to develop investigative skills. These skills may be directed toward clinical or basic investigation. The investigator track is intended to prepare the trainee for a career focused on research. Two fellows are accepted into the investigator track each academic year. Both clinician-track and investigator-track fellows spend their first year gaining intensive clinical exposure. Ambulatory care experience continues throughout all three years for both tracks. Typical time allotments for clinical and research rotations throughout the program are shown in the figure below. Some flexibility in the distribution of clinical and research time can occur in the second or third year. All fellows entering the program are exposed to research within and outside the division. Research is a highly regarded component of divisional activities, and all fellows are expected to participate in it. Neither training track precludes the possibility of becoming an outstanding clinician or an outstanding investigator. The clinical skill level of the trainee at the end of the first year is expectedly high. Trainees in the investigator track have ample opportunity to maintain and augment their clinical skills during the second and third years. Research projects for clinician-track fellows can be initiated during the first or second year and typically continue throughout the fellowship. The program is designed to allow for development of both clinical and investigative skills. Nevertheless, it is important that fellows entering the program select the track that most closely meets their career needs, because only a limited degree of conversion can occur in the last two years of training.
