Rights and Benefits The Division of Gastroenterology fully participates and endorses the uniform rights and benefits guidelines established by the Washington University School of Medicine. Additionally, the division accepts and participates in supplemental guidelines instituted by the Department of Medicine. Such supplemental guidelines include a moonlighting policy. The Fellowship Handbook is provided for all trainees in University-paid fellowship positions and outlines benefits and rights as well as procedural methods for grievances or disputes that might arise during the three-year curriculum. Similar information for trainees paid by the hospitals is provided in the Barnes-Jewish Hospital House Staff Manual. Additional information on rights or personnel issues can be obtained from the office of the Chairman of the Graduate Medical Education Committee of the University and from the Graduate Medical Education Office of Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Current policies prescribe that fellows receive three weeks of vacation per academic year. The program is designed to offer this in two blocks--a one-week block and a two-week block. This can be modified, if required by the fellow. The division also supports attendance at one major scientific meeting per year and trainee membership in the AGA, ASGE and AASLD with their respective journal subscriptions. Evaluations by the faculty that remain in the permanent record of the fellow are available for review by the trainee in the division office.
