Approximately 50 percent of former fellows from the division are currently making contributions to academic gastroenterology as basic scientists, clinical investigators or educators. As the division continues to grow and broaden, the fellowship program's dedication to academic medicine will continue.

The Match was reinstated in 2005-06 through the National Residency Matching Program. We have two tracks, one track funded through an NIH Training Grant, and the other track funded through institutional funds. There are two positions in each track. Scheduling differences between the two tracks consist of continuous research time (amounting to 17-18 months) in the NIH Training Grant funded track, and research blocks (amounting to a total of 11 months) alternating with clinical rotations in the institutionally funded track. We have a busy clinical program that ensures top notch clinical training for all fellows, regardless of track. In addition, we provide mentorship and educational tools to prepare all our fellows for scholarly investigation, during fellowship and beyond.

The following is our time-line for the fellowship application process for positions beginning July 2009:

Dec 07-Jan 08: Applications are accepted
Jan-Apr 08: Interviews will be scheduled
May 08: Rank lists are due to NRMP
Mid June 08: Match list is published

The fellowship program is now accepting applications for fellowship beginning July 2009 until January 31, 2008. The first year of fellowship is devoted to the basics of clinical gastroenterology, exposing the trainee to a wide variety of common gastrointestinal diseases. The subsequent two years complete clinical core requirements and provide opportunities to develop skills either in a basic sciences laboratory or in clinical application and investigation.

Two career track options

Fellows follow in one of two tracks, each designed to provide broad clinical experience leading to board certification in gastroenterology. The clinical investigator track emphasizes clinical training and clinical scholarship throughout all three years. The basic science research track emphasizes specialized training in basic research methods. Four fellows are accepted into the training program each academic year, two fellows in each of the two tracks. Learn more

Four program components

The program consists of four components: structured education, clinical curriculum, procedural training and research experience. The components are aimed at satisfying several objectives, organized by major disease categories, pathophysiological processes, anatomical regions and other technical aspects of the curriculum. Additionally, extensive independent study through unsupervised textbook reading and literature review is expected throughout the three-year program.

Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship

One position in a one-year Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship is offered, and plans are in place to accept two trainees in subsequent years. This will constitute a fourth year of training to follow completion of a conventional three-year gastroenterology fellowship at an accredited institution in the United States. Suitable candidates wishing to pursue advanced training in biliary, pancreatic and interventional endoscopy can apply. Applications are accepted two years preceding the beginning of the fellowship, and the application process for these positions is separate from the process for the conventional fellowship.
